With support from the Christian Arts Trust (CAT), over 100 clergy from the Diocese of London gathered at Lancaster University for their triennial residential conference. Hosted by Bishop Sarah Mullally and featuring art historians like Professor Ben Quash, the event explored how the arts can deepen faith, worship, and community life.
Over three days, clergy engaged with musicians, writers, painters, and academics through worship, shared meals, and interactive sessions. The Faith and the Arts theme sparked theological insight and creative energy:

“It didn’t feel like ‘work’—yet we’ll bring so much back to our parishes.”
“It was so refreshing to take ourselves out of ourselves.”
The impact is already clear across the Diocese:
- New Networks: The event prompted plans for a church-arts directory and resource hub.
- Art in Sacred Spaces: Professor Anne Grebby’s installations, born from conference connections, drew thousands in central London churches.
- Creative Spin-offs: Clergy have launched projects including video Stations of the Cross and expanded social media outreach.
This gathering illustrates the ripple effect of CAT’s support—equipping clergy to engage faith through the arts in fresh and dynamic ways.
