Intermission Youth Theatre (IYT)

masked

The Christian Arts Trust has proudly supported Intermission Youth Theatre (IYT) since its founding in 2008. Created by actor Darren Raymond at the invitation of Rev. Rob Gillion, then vicar of Holy Trinity, Sloane Square (and now a CAT trustee), IYT offers a powerful creative outlet for young people from disadvantaged London backgrounds.

What began with just four participants has grown into a transformative 10-month programme, serving over 150 young people aged 16–25. Participants build confidence, rediscover purpose, and often go on to higher education, drama school, or successful careers in the arts. Alumni have worked with Shakespeare’s Globe, the National Theatre, and the RSC, as well as in film and television.

Since 2013, IYT’s outreach has extended into schools, referral units, and youth offender institutions, reaching more than 7,000 young people. With patrons including Sir Mark Rylance, IYT is now an independent, thriving charity.

Ruth’s story speaks to its life-changing impact:

“I was 5 when I went into care and grew up hating authority. I was angry, going missing, and in with the wrong crowd. I joined IYT at 14. There, I felt normal. I felt wanted—for the first time, like I had a family. That changed me. I wanted to be around them more than the wrong crowd. Today, I run a business supporting at-risk youth into education and work. IYT helped me get here. I’ll always appreciate it as family.”

This is the kind of transformation CAT is proud to support.
